Permanent centres for Aadhaar, the scheme launched by the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) to provide UID numbers to the citizens, will be opened in Mysore and Bangalore districts, said Principal Secretary, E-governance, M.N. Vidyashankar.

He was speaking at a special lecture organised as part of the Legal Services Day at JSS Law College in the city on Tuesday.

"Aadhaar centres in the district will be increased from the present 75 to 450," Vidyashankar said and added that plans to open 24x7 Aadhaar centres will be discussed with the district administration.

"A permanent training centre will also be set-up in the city to supply a steady stream of enrollment personnel," he said, adding that 80,000 people had enrolled from Mysore and Tumkur districts while 40,000 UID cards had been distributed so far.

"A massive multi-media campaign will be undertaken to impress upon the people the necessity of UID," he said.

Expressing confidence that Mysore district will see 100 per cent UID enrollment by Jan. 31, 2011, Vidyashankar said Aadhaar centres will be opened in rema-ining 28 districts from Jan. 1, 2011.

He stated that permanent Aadhaar centres will be opened at Hobli and Panchayat levels and mobile units will be deployed in all nine Corporation areas of the State. Vidyashankar said that a 7-member team is carrying out inspections in Mysore, Nanjangud and Hunsur.

Clarifying that UIDAI has not made UID mandatory, Vidyashankar observed it will be the private and State agencies that will make UID mandatory as it reduces cost and file work. Advantages also include increa-sed efficiency and reduced corruption, he added.

He said when UID is completely implemented, a child will also be able to receive the number the day it's born.
