Transforming Government since 2001
The computerisation of the Income Tax department has resulted in a greater number of people filing their tax returns. The e-filing of tax returns has picked up over the years in Pune, with a sharp rise of 20 per cent compared with last year with 50-60 per cent returns, on an average filed through the e-route.

Speaking to Newsline, SK Jha, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax-2, Pune, who was in the four-member committee from India that visited Canada in 1993 to study about the computerisation of the Income Tax department, said that the transition from paper workto e-governance has eliminated the red-tapism and brought in more transparency. "Before the introduction of e-governance the paper works regarding filing of returns, processing, scrutiny and monitoring were time consuming task. The computerisation has not only eliminated the time delay in office work but also have benefited the common tax payer in a big way," he said.

In the the IT department, apart from the office computer, each IT official is also given a laptop by the department. "The whole idea is to make the tax filing and processing haze-free. In Pune we have introduced the Refund Banking Scheme in collaboration with the State Bank of India which is also running successfully. Also, from the past three years the corporate tax collection is being done through e-filing, which has been made compulsory," said Jha.

He said other than the benefits for the common tax payers, the technology has played a vital role to help the IT department for monitoring and investigating big individual tax payers. "We call it 360-degree profiling. Usually we collect data from the third party like mutual fund owners, club membership, foreign tours etc which are fed on our computer network which help us to effectively monitor big tax payers and carny out investigations," said Jha.

YA Mabrukar, Commissioner of Income Tax- IV, Pune, said that due to the presence of many Information Technology companies the employees prefer e-filing of the returns, and in the Hijewadi IT park alone there are more than 80,000 employees. "We have created awareness among the IT employees about the need for filing of IT returns, and many of them prefer e-filing. This year we have placed the counter in the Infosys campus that has 23,000 employees. We will be extending this facility to 21 IT companies soon," said Mabrukar.
