The government plans to add1,50,000 more common service centres (CSCs) to the current proposed count of 1,00,000 according to Abhishek Singh, director (e-Governance) with the department of information technology.
"The CSC roll out in states will reach 80,000 by end of April and will be complete for all 1,00,000 by June this year. The government is now thinking of having a CSC in each village. It might scale up its target CSC strength to 2,50,000," the official told GovernanceNow.
The CSC scheme, under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP), was to be implemented by March 2008. But it has been delayed due to various reasons. The pull out by 3i Infotech and Comat Technologies in various states has further delayed the scheme with the completion almost 21,000 CSC stalled.
However, the official added that the state governments have started course correction in the affected states. Tripura has already identified a different Service Centre Agency (SCA) while Tamil Nadu is in the process of awarding the project to L2 and other states have started the re-bidding process. The CSC roll out has been affected in Haryana, Tripura, Sikkim, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra due to the companies' pull out.
