The service was launched by Minister of State Sachin Pilot from his constituency of Ajmer in Rajasthan at a function in Pisangan Telephone Exchange.
This technology offers broadband speed of 7 Mbps at a distance of 15 kms, Pilot said.
The high-speed wireless broadband connectivity will offer video-conferencing, enabling tele-medicine and tele-education, besides providing other services, including payment of utility bills, issue of birth certificates, land records and registration of vehicles.
Pilot added this project would be linked to all common service centres in rural areas, which were associated with e-governance projects started by state governments.
In the first phase, BSNL will cover 1,000 block headquarters in the country, and the remaining through 50,000 common service centres in the second phase.
The rural common service centres are a part of the Bharat Nirman Programme of the UPA ministry.
