Transforming Government since 2001
In order to ensure speedy flow of intelligence and transparent investigation, the Centre on Friday cleared a Rs 2,000 crore project to interlink nearly 14,000 police stations across the country through Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).

Besides, the government also approved the procurement of a special aircraft for disaster management support (DMS) at an estimated cost of over Rs 179 crore. The specially designed aircraft is being procured from Brazilian firm Embraer.

The CCTNS, cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, will be initiated by the ministry of home affairs and implemented by the National Crime Records Bureau in three years.

"The project aims to create a comprehensive and integrated system to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of policing at the police station level by adopting principles of e-governance," home minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

The objectives of CCTNS are streamlining investigation and prosecution processes, strengthening of intelligence gathering machinery, improving public delivery system, citizen-friendly interface and nationwide sharing of information on crime and criminals.

"This is a critical requirement in the context of present day internal security scenario," Chidambaram said.

It will facilitate collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, transfer and sharing of data and information among police stations, districts, state headquarters and other agencies, including those at the central level. The system will also help in enabling and assisting senior officers in better management of police force, besides keeping track of crime and criminal investigation.

Chidambaram said, "People will also be able to file complaints to police stations and get status of complaints or cases registered. Besides, copies of FIRs, post-mortem reports and other permissible documents can also be obtained through this system."

Talking about the aircraft for DMS, the home minister said, "The availability of a dedicated aircraft will enhance the capability to undertake real-time as well as systematic scientific aerial survey operations in support of disaster management."
