“For the first time in India people are using the internet extensively for queries related to the elections. With elections in Pune due on Thursday, April 23, we are seeing a surge in election-related search queries. Majority of people were looking for Pune voters’ list as indicated by Wednesday’s Hot Trends on Google,” a company spokesperson told Sakal Times.
The trend shows that 75 per cent of the poll-related queries in Pune were for names in the voters’ list using Google. There were also queries posted from Mumbai seeking information about Pune voters’ list. Incidentally, ‘voters’ list Pune’ is the ninth most searched topic in Google out of 20 hot trends in the list.
“We found 13 per cent people from Mumbai searching for their names on the voters’ list in Pune. These people might be those who have migrated to Mumbai, but are registered as voters in Pune,” the spokesperson said.
“This portrays the important shift in the mindsets of people and how they have now come to rely on the Internet as one of their primary sources of information,” the spokesperson added.
Google Trends also shows how frequently your topics have appeared in Google News stories and in which geographic regions people have searched for them most.
In addition, Hot Trends tells you on an hourly basis what India is searching for.
“The 2009 elections has become an indication of the trend in India, a progression towards a more informed society where the world’s information is available at one’s fingertips,” he pointed out.
“The last bastion has been breached and even our government recognises the reach and potential of sharing information through the Internet,” the company spokesperson said.
This certainly shows the government a way to further strengthen its e-governance project by putting its electoral details like voters’ list on the Internet.
