As a pilot project, the Royapettah Government Hospital would be linked with six Government Headquarters Hospitals at Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Rameswaram and Udhagamandalam, Chennai Adyar Cancer Institute Managing Director T Rajkumar told reporters here yesterday.
He also said the Institute which recently set up a telemedicine facility networking six nodal centres across the country had introduced a training programme for paramedical staff and doctors on advanced treatment for cancer.
City-based GVN Hospital, one of the six nodal centres of Tele-Oncology Network, was directly communicating with rural patients after studying their medical records online, Dr Rajkumar said.
The nodal centres would initially offer treatment to the patients through telemedicine once every three months.
Dr Rajkumar said premature puberty, delayed pregnancy, menopause, high-fat and junk food, sedentary lifestyle and obesity were increasing the risk of breast cancer among women.
He said urbanites had higher risk of contracting cancer, when compared with to those in rural areas.
