Transforming Government since 2001
Telemedicine is the most challenging sector in this millennium, which has immense potential in India. Realising this, the Central Government has sanctioned nearly an amount of Rs 25-30 crores to the state governments of West Bengal and Tripura to render telemedicine zones in these two states.

“I feel telemedicine is the most challenging sector of e-governance. This will help people in the remote villages to avail specialised treatment from Kolkata on a cost-effective basis,” the idea has been shared by Goutam Bhattacharya, executive director, technology, West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Limited, in an exclusive interview to efytimes.

“The aim of the project is to connect remote hospitals to the cities state-of-the-art hospitals. Though presently, we are using Microsoft based software but in future we are planning to connect the entire network through Linux-based or open source software (OSS). WEBEL is one of the nodal agencies of the Bengal government to make the project a successful venture,” added Bhattacharya.

He further added that till date many districts and sub divisions hospitals have already been connected to Kolkata. Bhattacharya said, “We have connected Coochbehar, Habra, Arambagh, Purulia, Raiganj, Baharampur to the city hospitals like School of Tropical Medicine, Nil Ratan Sarkar Hospital, Burdwan Medical College, Calcutta Medical College. There is a provision of video conferencing, where doctors can exchange ideas for proper diagnosis of patients.”

In another interaction, Dr Debesh Das, minister of IT, government of West Bengal, said, “This is perhaps a leap towards successful utilisation of the benefits of the e-governance as we have already connected the 277 gram panchayats of the Burdwan district. Telemedicine will usher a new light towards achieving the target of reaching out the benefits of IT at the grassroots level at much rapid pace.”
