Sarawak Information Systems (Sains) has partnered Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak (Swinburne Sarawak) to conduct joint research, development and implementation of a digital socio-economy platform that could enhance the livelihood of rural communities in Sarawak.

Sains chief executive officer (CEO) Dato Teo Ten Hiong yesterday exchanged a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Swinburne Sarawak deputy vice chancellor and CEO Prof Janet Gregory, witnessed by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The simple ceremony held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia was attended by Sains chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, deputy chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain, as well as Swinburne Sarawak Board of Directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani.

The parties’ intention in respect of the MoA is to jointly research, develop and implement digital products and services for rural communities which could improve their quality of life and economic productivity.

The specific areas of interest to the MoA are health, tourism and transportation.

As part of the agreement, the parties have agreed to make available RM2 million over a 36 months’ period for the execution of the programme.

This collaboration is part of Sains’ ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to collaborate with the academic community in research and development works as part of its commitment for the betterment of Sarawak, especially among the rural community.

Earlier on, Sains also presented its Strategic Review 2016-2017 report to Abang Johari in which it has identified three key attributes that would contribute to Sains success.

They consisted of visionary, strong leadership and pragmatic hands on management-based approaches, its skills and dedicated team, and its aggressively positive culture of learning and knowledge sharing.

The Review also highlighted some of Sains’ major achievements including the successful implementation of numerous e-Government initiatives that have raised the state civil service ICT utilisation to the most advanced in the country with the model being emulated by other states in Malaysia.

They also noted that half of the state e-Government initiatives implemented by Sains met the highest Level of Maturity which denoted better coherence, integration and coordination of processes and systems within and across government agencies.

The strategic business review was carried out once every decade by independent external consultants to benchmark Sains’ overall position relative to the ICT industry at large.

As part of the ceremony, Sains also presented the Sarawak government its latest awards and achievements won in 2016 and earlier this year.

The achievements included the Global Super Excellent Brand Leadership Excellent Award by the Asia Entrepreneur Alliance, Asia Pacific 25 Most Promising GIS Solution Providers’ by APAC CIO Outlook Magazine, the Sains Electronic Payment Gateway (Payment Galaxy) received the Level 3 Malaysia Trustmark Approval Certification by Cybersecurity Malaysia under Mosti, and the most recent one the Star Outstanding Business Awards (Soba), Best in CSR, Platinum Award.

After the ceremony, Sains officials and the chief minister proceeded to a closed-door briefing.
