According to a report in The Star, the new system – called MySikap – is based on thumbprint biometrics and replaces a physical form system. The RTD handles an average of 1.4 million vehicle ownership transfers each year.
MySikap has been implemented in some states from as early as 2011, though starting next week all Malaysians will be able to use the system.

Vehicle ownership transfers are the focus of the system right now, though the department is planning other uses in the future.
Biometrics are being adopted rapidly by government agencies, as identity verification plays such a large role in their services. Reported previously, the Nigerian Police have recently introduced a similar biometric system for vehicle registration based on fingerprint biometrics embedded in smart cards.
Likewise, MorphoTrust USA, along with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security have introduced drivers’ license kiosks across the state which leverage facial recognition to verify cardholders looking to renew.
