Transforming Government since 2001
Organisations in the government ministries need to adopt an integrated and connected information and technology (IT) system in order to deliver enhanced services to citizens and businesses, said managing director for Cisco Systems in Malaysia, Johnson Khoo. Many of the IT system in government agencies in Malaysia still function as separate systems with no integration in applications and linkages between each different department," Khoo said in an interview recently.

Cisco Malaysia is organising a two-day seminar starting from today on E-Government.

Among the participants are representatives from the Inland Revenue Department and Customs Department.

Khoo said a web-site which served to provide information from all the government ministries was an example of an integrated and connected IT system.

This, one-stop web-site which provides information on all government ministries, he said, was evident in most developed countries.

"The management challenge for government is to achieve outstanding organisational performance and competence," Khoo said.

"It is to work out how to bring together different organisations that can work as if they were one entity, delivering value to customers and citizens that cannot be achieved alone," he added.

Khoo said this was especially useful for any event of national interest which effect more than one organisations in the government ministries such as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

An integrated IT system between various departments, he said, would assist the government tackle issues by sharing and accessing relevant information from different departments.

Khoo noted that Cisco Systems Malaysia had vast experience in its IT projects and this included working together with TMNet, the internet provider from Telekom Malaysia to upgrade TMNet's broadband speed as well as broadband service projects in Melaka.

Cisco Systems has more than 200 offices in countries worldwide.
