Transforming Government since 2001
Old Town Alexandria has a 21st Century twist - free wireless Internet access.

Undera one-year pilot project, the city offering the service in its historic center along King Street. The Washington Post reports that it's the first local government to offer such service.

City officials say it's aimed at outdoor cafe patrons or people who prefer parks to workstations. Alexandria's e-government manager, Craig Fifer, warns that the network isn't secure and that people shouldn't use it for sensitive things like banking.

There are smiliar plans afoot in Montgomery and Arlington counties. And the nonprofit Open Park Project is campaigning for wireless access along the entire length of the Mall.
