Transforming Government since 2001
The Texas Department of Public Safety has joined the Internet information revolution.

Much in the trend of Hurst, Amarillo, Grand Prairie and Hays County -- which have recently made accident reports available over the Web -- the Texas DPS has made it possible for people to order copies of their driving records over the Internet at www.texasonline.com, the state's official Web site. The service allows eligible driver's license and commercial driver's license holders to order records from home or work 24/7 using a credit or debit card. Texans can also order online address changes for driver's licenses and identification cards.

The access will come in handy for drivers who need the information for defensive driving classes or employment screening purposes, DPS Director Col. Thomas Davis Jr. said in a news release.

"We hope to save the public time and trouble with this innovation," Davis said.

To order a record online, people need to have information from their current driver's license. Services are available in English and Spanish, said Charles Bacarisse, chairman of the TexasOnline Authority, which oversees the development of the state's electronic government services.

DPS and the TexasOnline Authority have developed these online services in cooperation with BearingPoint, one of the world's largest business consulting and systems integration firms.

More than 900,000 Texans have used the DPS online services, said Gary Miglicco, BearingPoint's national director for E-Government Services. About 68 percent of Americans can access the Internet from home, school or work, a recent story in The Washington Post estimated.
