Transforming Government since 2001
In collaboration with six other Federal agencies, the Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) has announced an effort to make Federal research information available on the Web. Using www.osti.gov/fedrnd/, citizens can now search at one Web portal across more than half-a-million summaries of R&D projects from seven Federal resources. OSTI recently added four resources to its Web collection of research summaries, which is free and open to the public. New to the collection is information on Small Business Administration awards; unclassified research earmarked as "high potential" for domestic technology transfer from the Department of Defense (DoD); ongoing and recently completed research projects in agriculture, food and nutrition, and forestry from the Department of Agriculture (USDA); and a snapshot of work the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is doing right now in any given topic area.

In addition, OSTI's Federal R&D Project Summaries Database still showcases records of ongoing and recently completed R&D projects from the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The cross-agency portal is one of several OSTI egovernment initiatives. OSTI's Federal R&D Project Summaries database is designed to provide a unique window to the Federal research community, allowing agencies to better understand the research and development efforts of their counterparts in government.

An enhanced search technology, developed by Deep Web Technologies for OSTI, allows users to search with one query across project summaries from all included databases. Summary results are relevancy ranked and results can also be displayed by agency resource, if a particular agency is of special interest.

Records can be searched from the following databases:

  • SBA Technology Resources Network (Tech-Net);
  • DOD Technology Transfer Database (T2);
  • USDA Current Research Information System (CRIS);
  • EPA Science Inventory;
  • DOE R&D Project Summaries Database;
  • NIH Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects (CRISP);
  • and NSF Awards Database.
