CoworkingCafe ranked the top five cities on smart infrastructure and tech job availability.

Cities on the West Coast and in the Northeast lead the United States in adopting cutting-edge technology for urban sustainability. This is according to a ranking developed by CoworkingCafe, which evaluated cities across the nation in terms of their smart infrastructure, green initiatives and tech job availability.

California is a frontrunner with four cities ranking among the top 10 for smart city development – San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego. The study also pointed to Washington, D.C., and New York City, as innovators in integrating smart transit systems, green buildings and digital governance platforms to create more efficient and sustainable urban environments.

San Francisco earned the top spot on CoworkingCafe’s list, making it the smartest city in 2025. The city attracts top-tier talent and fosters innovation with nearly 40 tech jobs advertised per 1,000 jobs in the area. The city also has the highest concentration of artificial intelligence and Internet of Things companies of any U.S. city. San Francisco has 42 electric vehicle promotions, including discounted parking for EVs and purchasing incentives, and the city prioritizes digital equity and digital literacy.

Across the country, New York City is the second-smartest city in the country, according to CoworkingCafe’s ranking. The city offers 379 coworking spaces facilitating remote work and features 162 free Wi-Fi hotspots to promote digital access. It is home to 276 AI companies and prioritizes zero-waste programs, extensive EV charging infrastructure and a high percentage of electric and hybrid public transport vehicles.

Ranking third on Coworking Cafe’s list is San Jose, which is a leader in tech job availability and is home to major tech companies including Apple, Google and Adobe. The city hosts a significant number of EV charging stations (575) and has implemented strong zero-waste initiatives and championed LEED-certified buildings.

Washington, D.C. takes the fourth spot on the smartest cities list with strong government-backed tech employment and a leading position in sustainable architecture with 1,964 LEED-certified green buildings. Advanced transportation policies include extensive EV promotion and a high percentage of electric and hybrid public transportation vehicles. The city also is focussed on improving air quality and reducing environmental impact.

Rounding out the top five smart cities is Austin, Texas, which has experienced rapid tech job growth and is considered an innovation hub. The city has 71 coworking spaces and a robust EV infrastructure with 622 charging stations.
