A new Interactive Kiosk Experience (IKE) by IKE Smart City was installed this week on the new sidewalk in front of Cross Street Market at Light St. and E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. The installation of IKEs around Downtown is a collaboration between Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Baltimore City officials, and IKE Smart City.
Additional Baltimore IKE locations include Pratt and Light Plaza, Power Plant, E. Pratt St. and Commerce St., Charles St. and Saratoga St., E. Pratt St. and Market Pl., Cathedral St. and Mulberry St., and Camden Yards at Paca St.
he interactive wayfinding and information systems are designed to “make it easier to navigate Downtown Baltimore, find things to do and places to shop and eat, access City services, and receive real-time traffic and transit information.”
Each IKE has a double-sided digital display with apps offering an array of uses like helping pedestrians discover nearby attractions and parks, and providing them with multi-modal directions to destinations within the area. Information about public events or public safety can be pushed to the kiosks in real- time, and users will have the option to transfer information to their smart phones. Among its other features, IKEs monitor air quality, offer interactive games, and have cameras for selfies.
No public funding was used to launch the IKE Smart City program in Baltimore. DPOB said it will generate a revenue stream that can be reinvested into city programs and improvements.
IKE Smart City is based in Columbus, Ohio and IKEs were first launched in Denver, Colorado.
“Public/private projects like this are exciting,” said DPOB President Kirby Fowler in a press release when IKEs were first launched in April. “We’re thrilled to be part of an innovative effort that makes an immediate impact, and not only creates an improved street level experience, but also offers a needed service.”
Pete Scantland, CEO of IKE Smart City, said in the press release: “Baltimore is a rising tech city, and the installation of the IKE kiosk platform reflects that. It’s an interactive portal to everything in the city, available to everyone in the city.”
