Transforming Government since 2001
In past years, Arkansans have had an extra month to file their state income taxes. To eliminate confusion among taxpayers, the state has implemented the same April 15 deadline as the IRS for filing individual income taxes this year. Thanks to an online service available through the state's official Web site at www.Arkansas.gov, online tax filing services can help Arkansans meet this year's accelerated state income tax filing deadline. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration's Web Tele-file service for filing is available to any taxpayer who filed an Arkansas AR1000 tax return in 2003 and has been mailed a tax booklet with Tele-file on the cover.

Web Tele-file is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The easy-to-use Internet filing system does not require specific software, and all that is needed to get started is a computer with an Internet connection and the Arkansas Tele-file booklet. The system includes built-in calculators to eliminate data entry errors and also provides confirmation numbers and printable copies of filed returns, thereby eliminating the need to mail documents to the Department of Finance and Administration. For those taxpayers without Internet access, the Tele-file system is also available through a convenient telephone system.

"Using the same deadline as the IRS will allow taxpayers to prepare both their federal and state tax return at the same time, eliminating the possibility of filing their federal return and then forgetting to file their state return," said Preston Means of the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. "This will result in additional cost to the taxpayer and additional cost of revenues to the state."

More than 446,000 Arkansans have already filed their 2003 taxes electronically. The online Tele-file system is free to those who qualify for a refund or who pay by electronic check. Taxpayers who overpaid their 2003 taxes and file online will receive their refunds within five to seven days, while refunds from paper returns will take approximately four weeks.
