Transforming Government since 2001
A proposal to establish an Internet system to provide access to public records for a fee ran into trouble in the House Monday.

The bill initially was rejected with 38 House members voting against it and 26 for it. But lawmakers revived the legislation later in the day and then put the bill aside. It was left in limbo as time runs out on the session - which adjourns Thursday.

The measure remains alive and can be debated again.

The legislation would permit the state to contract with a private vendor to operate and upgrade a portal. It would allow individuals and businesses to access records and government information through the Internet.

Fees charged for access to the records would pay for the computer improvements and operation of the e-government system.
