Along with mHealth, the digital health industry is making a big splash across the nation’s medical sphere, specifically with regard to patient engagement. Healthcare providers are often concerned with meaningful use regulations as well as the general push toward improving patients’ engagement with their health and wellness.

The digital health industry is focused on meeting the needs of medical care providers regarding stronger patient-physician communication and analyzing information in ways to produce more actionable data. The fourth annual Digital Health Summer Summit brought together many experts of the digital health industry to share some key solutions to the many challenges of the medical field, according to a press release from About Living in Digital Times.

“Everyone was in agreement that digital health startups have a valuable role in not only bridging the divide between the healthcare establishment and the patient but also forcing a new level of provider accountability,” Jill Gilbert, producer of the Digital Health Summer Summit, said in the press release. “Our attendees were able to exchange ideas on how to deal with the modern business challenges facing digital health as well as hot topics and trends in this space.”

Remote monitoring sensors and devices are making a large impact on the mobile and digital health space. Usability as well as “accuracy and reliability” are key aspects of the type of medical devices consumers desire, according to Marco Peluso, CEO of Qardio, Inc.

Additionally, the privacy and security of patient data remains complex within the regulatory framework of the digital health industry. There are often ongoing modifications when it comes to health data security, which can cause confusion among healthcare providers. Vendors especially will need to keep track of regulatory changes within the privacy and security aspects of the digital health space.

"Data security and privacy is complicated and a relationship between the covered entity and the data provider is something that needs to be worked on together and is an important lesson for every developer," Doug Foster, CEO of DigiSight Technologies, said in a public statement.

When attempting to resolve various issues of the healthcare industry and develop effective solutions, transformative partnerships may be the way to go. In order to develop effective partnerships, it’s important to ensure there are enough resources among the multiple organizations and each entities goals match.

“Sometimes it is trial by fire very early on. One must be really clear on what the metrics for success looks like. If it is a research study, what is that path to success? We have had to walk away from a lot of deals. A successful partnership is with Kaiser. We didn't get it right early. We learned through the process as both sides were trying to discover what is needed to integrate digital health into the mental health system,” Karan Singh, Co-Founder of Ginger.io, said in the release.

The digital health industry and its many solutions will need to be integrated into the workflows of healthcare providers in order to strengthen the quality of patient care across the healthcare spectrum.
