Rural Nevada is Nation’s Third-Most Expensive Health Care Market – Telehealth Offers Affordable Option

Rural Nevadans pay significantly higher premiums for health insurance coverage than city residents, according to a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation. These disparities are likely due to smaller networks of doctors and hospitals in remote areas, according to the study, which means insurance discounts are smaller.

The lowest-price health plan, the Silver Plan, in rural Nevada costs $456 a month, making the region the third-most expensive health insurance market in the U.S. Some health experts believe expenses will decline over time, as telemedicine provides more convenient access to health care.

Nevada Health CO-OP, the nonprofit health insurance provider on the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, offers coverage options that can help rural Nevadans manage health care costs. The CO-OP offers free access to Telehealth services in which patients can call or video conference with physicians 24/7, any day of the year. This allows rural Nevadans immediate access to health care providers they didn’t have before, and at zero cost.
