State Vehicle License Plates to Raise Awareness of Maine's eGovernment Services.

Maine is taking its eGovernment message to the streets.

Last week, Governor John E. Baldacci and Secretary of State Dan A. Gwadosky unveiled a new license plate for state vehicles that showcases www.Maine.gov, the state's award-winning Web portal. "Maine is helping to lead the way with its award-winning eGovernment portal and services," said Governor Baldacci at an event outside the State House at which the first of the new license plates was attached to a state vehicle.

Maine.gov is Maine's official portal and is the Internet gateway for businesses, citizens, and visitors to interact electronically with state government. All official Maine state government Web pages and services can be accessed from www.Maine.gov.

"Maine residents are getting online instead of in line in growing numbers," said Secretary of State Gwadosky, who oversees the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Maine and is chair of the InforME Board of Directors, which helps to oversee the Maine.gov portal.

The Maine.gov portal receives more than four million page hits per month, up from just one million per month in the year 2000. The portal boasts more than 300 online services, including vehicle registration renewals, vanity plate availability checks, annual report filings, and fishing licenses.

"This license plate is a low-tech, common sense initiative for a high-tech purpose," remarked Governor Baldacci.

"Maine.gov processes more than 700,000 online government transactions on behalf of citizens and businesses each month," said Secretary Gwadosky. "More people are using these services than ever before, and I expect that number will keep growing."

The www.Maine.gov license plate will gradually replace existing state vehicle plates in the coming years. The older plates, which say "Maine" across the top and "State" across the bottom, will be phased out as vehicles are retired from state service.
