Transforming Government since 2001
The Tennessee Department of Revenue says more than $2 million in sales and use tax revenues has been filed electronically since the state launched its online tax service July 1.

Tennessee Department of Revenue commissioner Loren L. Chumley says more than 300 businesses registered for the e-filing option in the first 30 days. She says e-filing is convenient for the customer and efficient for the state.

Online payments can be made with electronic funds transfers and are processed through the site's secure payment server.

All taxpayer data filed electronically or on paper with the Department of Revenue is confidential data protected under Tennessee law.

Businesses and citizens can currently file Hall income taxes, professional privilege taxes, and sales and use taxes through the Web site.

Information about motor fuel tax electronic data interchange is also available online at www.Tennessee.gov.

The Department of Revenue collected $7.4 billion in state taxes and fees in the 2001-2002 fiscal year, 92% of the state's total tax revenues.

In addition to collecting state taxes, more than $1.4 billion in local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2001-2002 fiscal year.

The online sales and use tax service was built by Tennessee Information Division, a subsidiary of e-government firm NIC, which manages the site on behalf of the state.
