USA: Misplaced Your Car Registration? Maine Now Offers Online Duplicate Vehicle Registration Service
Citizens need to have a copy of their current registration certificate in their vehicle at all times, and also need to provide it when having the vehicle inspected annually. The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles processes approximately 30,000 duplicate registration requests each year. Previously, citizens had to request a duplicate registration using a paper form at a motor vehicle branch or municipal office during normal business hours.
With the online service, citizens can submit a duplicate registration request 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The $3 fee may be paid by Visa or MasterCard as is processed through Maine.gov’s secure payment system. Duplicate registration certificates are mailed by the BMV and typically received within seven days.
Not only has the service brought convenience to citizens, but it has also helped reduce the overall lines at BMV branch offices. The online service is available to anyone holding a valid Maine vehicle registration, including residents of all Maine municipalities and non-residents such as students and military personnel.
“The online duplicate registration request service has assisted the Bureau of Motor Vehicles with reducing our manual processes,” said Clarissa Hurley, Bureau of Motor Vehicles Online Service Branch Manager. “Fewer paper forms and less manual data entry have resulted in time-savings for both BMV and municipal staff.”
This online service has enhanced the popular suite of electronic services available through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, including vehicle registration renewal, trailer registration renewal, driver record orders, and vanity license plate orders. More than 450 online government services are now available through Maine.gov.
