The funding will be divided so that $15 million supports electronic health records implementation and $10.6 million will be used for a secure health information network to be built in Massachusetts.
The $25.6 million amount represents the full amount that Massachusetts is eligible to receive from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Patrick pushed for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding in a meeting with federal officials in November.
The Massachusetts e-Health Institute (MeHI), a Massachusetts Technology Collaborative division, is responsible for administering the federal funds for the e-health records. More specifically, a state-issued press release notes that MeHI will ensure privacy of health records is protected; form expert health technology groups to offer guidance and achieve certification; help with the outreach to providers; and provide grants for organizations to adopt the e-health records.
