Under the deal, Google maps will show new developments in the oasis city, residents will be able to translate official documents into another language, and the local government will be able to use the US firm’s systems for administration.
“We can help Al Ain to maximise the effectiveness of its e-government portal [and] link all the information and resources available to Al Ain residents,” Matthew Landeg, the head of enterprise sales for Google, told the National.
Google will provide the services in phases over a 12-month period, the paper said.
One idea that was raised was to set up a Google email account for every household for the local authority to be able to communicate with residents.
“If this idea is indeed put into effect, the Al Ain Municipality will probably be the first in the world to do this,” a spokesman for the company told the paper.
Mohammed al Neyadi, the executive director for strategic planning at the municipality, confirmed the deal saying it “will allow information transfer and direct contact between the municipality and its residents”.
