Transforming Government since 2001
The state of Rhode Island announced today that official Web site www.RI.gov has earned top honors in the Interactive Media Awards, an international competition for excellence in Web site design and development. The site – a joint effort between the State of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Interactive – was named an Outstanding Achievement winner in the Government category for meeting the highest standards of design, usability, innovation, content and accessibility.

“We’re pleased to have RI.gov recognized as a best-in-class Web site and I congratulate the team behind this work,” said Governor Donald L. Carcieri. “Citizens are turning to the Web more and more for government information and business, and it’s important to provide an easy-to-use, helpful resource.”

RI.gov provides more than 1,200 links to state and local government Web pages and information and over seventy online government services, sorted and searchable by user-friendly tags. The site also offers transparent government resources including an ‘open checkbook’ displaying the latest expenditure and budget data for twenty state agencies and offices.

The state’s site is an industry leader in ‘Web 2.0’, using emerging Web trends and technology to help citizens better interact with government. RI.gov offers a Twitter feed of state agency press releases, a YouTube channel for government video notifications, and homework help via live chat with a RI state librarian. A Flickr photo pool has more than 1,000 publicly submitted photos mapped to popular RI locations, and much of the portal’s database is available through XML feed for developers to use in new and unique data-sharing projects.

The Interactive Media Council, a non-profit organization of leading Web developers, managers and programmers, serves as the primary sponsor and governing body of the Interactive Media Awards, and the Council’s prominent Web and IT professionals serve as judges for the competition. To earn the Outstanding Achievement title, the RI.gov site had to meet strict guidelines in each defined judging area — a benchmark only a fraction of sites in the IMA competition earns each quarter. Other 2009 Outstanding Achievement in Government winners included Tourism Western Australia and the City of Calgary, Alberta.
