The 2008 Best of the Web competition recognizes the most innovative and user-friendly state Web portals and was conducted by the Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. Sites are judged on delivery of public services, efficiency, economy, and functionality for improved citizen access. Representatives from the Center for Digital Government and officials from the 2007 Best of the Web-winning state and local governments served as judges for this year’s competition.
Colorado.gov was relaunched in May 2008 and the redesigned portal focuses on usability, dynamic Colorado-specific content, and improved productivity for the tens of thousands of visitors the portal receives each day. Through new technologies, XML feeds, and appropriate Web 2.0 elements, Colorado.gov now offers many enhancements, including:
- Fold-down top navigation and mouse-over tab panels
- Increased searching capability through Google
- Interactive state telephone directory and searchable Contact Compass for state offices
- Google map mash-ups
- Content-specific callouts on secondary pages
- An “icon box” that provides quick links back to home page features from deep within the site
- Technology that allows quick loading of Colorado.gov via mobile phones and other wireless devices
“Each year, state and local governments continue to make strides toward implementing better access and more efficient Web-delivery of public services,” said Cathilea Robinett, Executive Director of the Center for Digital Government. “This year’s winners represent the very best in each category, and the Center applauds Colorado for its diligence and hard work.”
Colorado’s official Web portal is overseen by the Colorado Statewide Internet Portal Authority, which is chaired by Senator Bill Cadman. Colorado.gov offers and provides real-time customer support for dozens of interactive government services, including vehicle registration renewals, driver license and state ID card renewals, online tax payments, motor vehicle verifications, and sex offender mapping. Colorado.gov also offers Content Management System (CMS) training and support to agencies to create a consistent, statewide approach to governmental entity Web sites.
