Transforming Government since 2001
If the city's Information Technology Department were to sit on Santa's lap, the IT employees could prove they've good all year.

The Center for Digital Government this month named Aurora the most technology advanced city in the United States in 2007.

Aurora beat out cities with populations of 250,000 or more including Miami, Washington D.C., San Diego and Phoenix.

The only other Colorado city to rank in the top 10 was Colorado Springs, which came in seventh.

"This is a great honor for our Information Technology department and the city," said City Manager Ron Miller, in a statement. "Digital technology connects citizens with their local government on a level never before achieved."

The ranking, now in its seventh year, examines how cities are using technology to create a seamless environment between local government and constituents, according to the Center for Digital Government's web site.

Aurora's e-government services include sales tax payments, building permit applications, a public records search, accident reports, and expected in the future, crime reports, all done online.

The city's website will also introduce you to the animals currently available for adoption at the Aurora Animal Shelter or locate where registered sex offenders live in individual neighborhoods.

The city has plans to become even more technologically savvy next year, by plugging into a data sharing system known as Coplink.

Coplink is expected to link law enforcement data bases throughout the state and help police track down criminals more efficiently, although the technology will not be within the public domain.

The IT staff was honored for their outstanding achievement as a top ten Digital City at the National League of Cities convention, held in New Orleans on November 15, according to city spokeswoman Kathy Cable.

The city's website is at www.auroragov.org.
