For three consecutive years, the City of Corpus Christi has been recognized as a "Top 10 Digital City" by the Center for Digital Government. This year, the City received notification that it is ranked as the number one digital city in the nation, of cities with populations of more than 250,000. Corpus Christi received its first place designation over such cities as Los Angeles, California, Tampa, Florida and Chicago, Illinois. Corpus Christi is the only city of its size in Texas to be recognized with a top 10 designation.

The rankings are based on an annual survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government and the National League of Cities. The study examines how city governments are utilizing digital technology to better serve their citizens and streamline operations. This year's survey was conducted this past summer, and its questions focused on such things as what a particular city has done in the implementation and adoption of online services, such as payment applications, interactive forms, emergency preparedness information, surveys and service request forms, job applications, and content management systems. There are also several questions about strategic planning, security, server hosting environments and other systems that support online business processes.

The City's E-Government Services Department has implemented a number of applications which allow such things as the scheduling of building inspections online. Other online applications include utility payments, facility rentals and registration for many of the Parks and Recreation Department's programs. Online applications not only improve customer service, but also provide opportunities for operational efficiencies. "I'm extremely proud of what we've done to receive this great honor," said E-Government Services Director Susan Cable. "I have a great team to work with, and we really accomplished a lot this year with our expanded online and IVR Services. The competition with all the other cities in the United States is formidable, to say the least. So we're very pleased to receive this recognition for our efforts," Cable said.

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. Awards will be presented to the winners on December 8, 2005 during the National League of Cities conference.
