Pearson Government Solutions Inc. of Arlington and Aspen Systems Corp. of Rockville were among five companies selected by the General Services Administration to provide contact center services to federal agencies.

The contract has a combined value of $150 million over five years for the companies, which are to compete for orders from individual agencies.

Alabama has jumped 15 places in a national survey of state government Web sites conducted by the California-based Center for Digital Government.

The improvement was a pleasant surprise to Gov. Bob Riley's office.

"Gov. Riley has put a special emphasis on refining state government so that it operates more efficiently ...," said Riley spokesman Jeff Emerson. "We're moving up steadily in the ranking."

The Office of Personnel Management plans to call soon for governmentwide training standards for information technology employees. And it will work with the federal IT community this fall to develop training policies.

OPM Director Kay Coles James revealed this in a written response to a new Government Accountability Office report critical of the way agencies train their IT workers. According to GAO, agencies make limited use of best practices for training information technology employees and they cite funding and time constraints as major obstacles.

Odessa residents will soon be able to register their cars and pickups with a credit card and a mouse.

After a year of planning, Ector County Tax Assessor-Collector Lea Taylor announced Tuesday that motorists may pay for their annual motor-vehicle registration online beginning Tuesday.

Since June 4, Taylor’s office has been accepting property-tax payments online as well.
