Transforming Government since 2001

The AllTransit database delivers routes and times for bus, rail and ferry services delivered by over 500 city agencies, then cross-references this against demographic data, jobs information, housing, parking and a range of other critical metrics.

When is a bus route more than just a bus route? When it is a driver for economic development.

“Transit data comes with economic and social benefits,” said Linda Young. “Someone might be evaluating different sites for building housing. Now for the first time you can see how many jobs you can get to from that location. It’s not longer just asking: Are we in a busy place? We can see exactly how many jobs you can access on transit.”

Colorado CIO Suma Nallapati wants to transform IT systems so that people look forward to interacting with government.

Since becoming CIO of Colorado in May 2014, Suma Nallapati has focused on cloud computing and improving the user experience. Prior to state government, she led service delivery operations for Catholic Health Initiatives, one of the nation’s largest health-care networks, and co-founded an IT consulting firm, which helps frame her thinking when working with tech startups and entrepreneurs. We caught up with her in November at the Reverb conference in Denver, where the idea was posed that “government” should become the next noun to morph into a verb. “We Google, we tweet, we Uber, we Airbnb,” Nallapati said. “We should come up with a great word for that, and it should be so modern and effective that people look forward to interacting with government.”

Tompkins County and the town of Dover created shared services programs for electronic records management.

As populations grow, the need for services increases and budgets remain stagnant or, in some organizations shrink, the shared services model is becoming more important to government agencies. Two organizations that took the leap are New York’s Tompkins County and the town of Dover, which both received grants from the New York State Archives to create shared services programs for electronic records management.
