Transforming Government since 2001

Cloud computing, mobile devices, the Internet of Things, and the increasing digitization of information and processes are pushing agencies toward a hybrid computing environment. This is when agencies have a mix of on premise and commercial cloud infrastructures.

Among the challenges these hybrid environments present are around securing your data.

On one hand, experts say moving non-mission critical systems and data to the public cloud offers flexibility and agility with little worry.

The latest National Action Plan for Open Government, scheduled to be released later this month, is a “huge opportunity to give open government a refresh,” according to a senior White House official working on the transparency initiative.

The forthcoming document will, as its three predecessors have, set U.S. open government goals for the next two years. The perennial mission is to make the government more “open, accountable and responsive.”

Social media has evolved into the preferred method to reach and engage with the masses, culminating in exponential amplification. Individuals, businesses and celebrities have harnessed its power, yet the government has been slow to maximize social media as an outreach tool. Why has the government been slow to adopt?

Over time, the federal government has been behind the curve as it pertains to effective use of social media. The government traditionally used its social platforms as a way to provide static information via direct hyperlinks or to provide applicable updates on agencies. As social media has evolved, the government is viewing it more as a tool rather than a mandated “e-government” initiative for public service delivery. These accounts provide for input (e.g. signing up for updates), which helps the agency identify and understand its followers and track their sentiment.

A net six in ten Americans say they'd be interested in being a smart city resident, though they admit limited knowledge about what that entails and have concerns about tradeoffs in government services, according to a new study released today by CompTIA, the world's leading technology association.

The CompTIA report "Building Smarter Cities and Communities" surveyed 1,000 U.S. households and 350 U.S government officials on their awareness and interest in the concept of smart communities. The report also examines what it will take to move beyond pilots, tests and trials to full-scale systems that deliver benefits to both the municipality and its citizens.

E-government services firm NIC says its new consumer platform is the answer to government's silo problem.

States pursuing a single citizen-centric touchpoint for service delivery may find their solution in a new consumer app announced by NIC on Monday.

The e-government services organization has announced that its Gov2Go “personal assistant for government” is now available for free download and use in all 50 states. Drawing on federal, state and local government sources, the app provides users with access to a wide range of information and services, like license renewal and payment reminders, using a single interface, without the need to visit multiple websites or reenter personal and payment information.
