The fifth installment of MetroLab’s Innovation of the Month series highlights how Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Fire is using predictive analytics to help their department prioritize commercial building inspections in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University.

In this installment of the Innovation of the Month series (read last month’s story here), we explore how Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Fire is using predictive analytics to help their department prioritize commercial building inspections. Working with Metro21, Carnegie Mellon University’s Smart Cities Initiative, the partnership has allowed graduate students to work on real-world problems facing the city and has helped the Bureau of Fire think about how data can facilitate their work.

The town of Eaton, Colorado, ranks the third safest community in Colorado (SafeWise Report: The 20 Safest cities in Colorado—2017). 2017 is the second consecutive year it has achieved this distinction. With recent website enhancements, Eaton is keeping safety a top priority. “As one of Colorado’s safest places to live, we demonstrate the main criteria—a commitment to the well-being of our citizens,” says Assistant Town Administrator, Jeff Schreier. Schreier utilizes the website to instruct citizens about how to request police reports, view the police blotter, check the Sex Offender Registry and report street light outages. The website also keeps citizens up-to-date on the US85 Resurfacing Project from Eaton to Ault, which will improve the highway’s safety.

The Maryland Board of Physicians evaluated, then tabled for further consideration, a set of new telehealth rules designed to expand the opportunities for hospitals and providers to deliver virtual care services in Baltimore and throughout the State.  The Board held a public hearing on January 24, 2018 to review proposed telehealth rules originally issued late last year. The new rules were influenced by the Washington, DC telemedicine rules, and incorporate comments submitted by a number of telehealth industry advocates, including the successful efforts of the folks at the Maryland Telehealth Alliance.
