Transforming Government since 2001

Dive Brief:

  • The City of Philadelphia's Office of Innovation and Technology officially established a SmartCityPHL advisory committee and unveiled its SmartCityPHL Roadmap on Monday.
  • The smart city roadmap highlights three core strategies: building a strong foundation of policy and infrastructure; creating a strategic process for engagement and partnership; and supporting and sustaining implementation of projects and programs with funding.
  • The SmartCityPHL initiative was originally established in 2017 and has been supported by a $200,000 investment from the Knight Foundation, which serves as a key partner on the city's placemaking and engagement projects.

Washington, D.C. is the capital of the US, the 20th most-populous city in the country with less than 1 million residents, but 20 million visitors each year. Local e-government innovation is alive and well, with a movement to make daily life easier, the streets cleaner, and citizens more generally content.

With an influx of commuters from the surrounding suburb each weekday, and security measures which are as extreme as any in the country, and possibly in the world, to defend against terrorist threats and attacks (Washington hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the World Bank) the management of parked cars on the streets has taken on a new level of complexity, including a towing operation that may not be the most popular service provided by local government.

Digital transformation is more than just a buzzword, and it's got some real-life enterprise support. A report by Tech Pro Research found that 70 percent of companies either have a digital transformation strategy in place or are working on one. Further, IT digital transformation budgets increased from 2016 to 2017 for 53 percent of survey respondents.

Digital transformation projects that succeed are usually an enterprise-wide effort “best served by a leader with broad organizational purview,” according to the latest “State of Digital Transformation” report by Altimeter, a Prophet company. CIOs mostly own or sponsor digital transformation initiatives (28 percent), with CEOs increasingly playing a leadership role (23 percent). Why are companies transforming digitally? Growth opportunities (51 percent) and increased competitive pressure (41 percent) are the top reasons, according to recent Altimeter research.

Move over, Columbus. Ohio has a new smart city on the rise.

In January 2018, the city of Cincinnati released a request for proposals (RFP) for a partner to deliver free, high-speed Wi-Fi along the city's 3.6-mile streetcar route and adjacent areas. After a search for the "most advantageous proposals from the most qualified respondents," Cincinnati wrapped up the year by launching a partnership with telecom company Cincinnati Bell to build, operate and maintain this project.

The partnership is anticipated to not only bridge a digital divide in the city, but to also help Cincinnati realize its "Smart Cincy" vision. While neighboring metro hub Columbus may have put Ohio on the smart city map, Cincinnati is entering the space with uniquely catered innovations and initiatives.

About 77,000 Louisiana motorists have downloaded the license app since the statewide launch of LA Wallet in July 2018. While law enforcement accepts the DDL as a form of identity, the retail sector remains wary.

Drivers in Louisiana may want to leave their driver’s license at home, as long as they remember to take along their phone as they head out the door.
