Transforming Government since 2001
An AP story on Yahoo News this morning discusses how emergency alert emails from local government leaders in Indian River County, Florida, are blocked by AOL as spam. Indian River County, which happens to be one county south of where I grew up, implemented an emergency email system to get the word out to local residents when things such as mandatory hurricane evacuations go into effect. Over 4,000 residents subscribe to the service. The only problem is that AOL's servers list the county's emergency coordinator email address as spam; so whenever he tried to send out an emergency alert, residents who happened to be AOL users didn't get the memo. AOL says it's now working on a way to let the messages through.

On last Friday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven J. Law announced the launch of GovLoans.gov en Espanol and the expansion of the www.GovBenefits.gov Web site to more than 1,000 federal and state benefit programs. The announcement was made during a celebration of the Web site's third anniversary.

GovLoans.gov En Espanol offers Spanish-speaking communities greater access to available federal and state loan program information. GovBenefits.gov was among the Top 25 finalists for the 2005 Excellence.gov Award from the Industry Advisory Council. The Web site is one of the key initiatives that comprise the President's E-Government Strategy which focuses on making government programs and information more accessible to the public.

On the third anniversary of its benefits Web site, the Labor Department on Friday unveiled a new design function intended to promote participation among federal and state agencies and announced that its loans Web site is available in Spanish.

Using the "Customized Connections" program, agencies will be able to link to GovBenefits.gov through their main Web sites via a portal that will retain the design and structure of the original site. Users seeking benefits information who click through Labor's Web site, for example, will be provided with the benefits data in the same font and colors used by Labor, "so they don't feel like it's a different site," Steven Law, deputy secretary of Labor, said at an event touting the site's refurbishing.
