The legislature wanted to entirely abolish the office and its functions, but Gov. Jeb Bush (R) vetoed that bill. Instead, the legislature approved funding to make the office a new division in the Florida Department of Management Services.
But the position of state CIO, as well as companion IT policy functions, was eliminated.

Part of the reason is that the larger agencies are powerhouses whose bureaucracies can dwarf even the governors office. Any effort by state leadershipgovernor, lawmakers or the state CIOto tackle IT governance head-on is admirable in and of itself. Its rare that there is ever highly centralized control of IT governance in any of the super-size states.
