The Army is examining how IoT and smart city tech can be used in combat situations.
Smart cities could help the military perform better on the battlefield. The Army Research Laboratories (ARL) is studying smart city infrastructure to see how it might improve the military’s capabilities in dense urban environments. It’s part of their exploration of the latest spin-off of the IoT, the IoBT, or the internet of battlefield things. They want to see how the IoBT can use sensors and other IoT technology and are doing so by testing a long-range, wide-area network (LoRaWAN).

A new index ranking the 102 “smartest” cities in the world, based on interviews with residents about how technologically advanced their infrastructures and municipal services are, contains just nine cities in the United States — all of which landed outside the top 10.
San Francisco came in at No. 12 on the IMD Smart City Index 2019, the inaugural edition of a survey conducted by the Swiss International Institute for Management Development and Singapore University for Technology and Design. Washington, D.C., Boston, New York City, Denver and Seattle all cracked the top 40, while Chicago and Philadelphia placed at 53rd and 54th, respectively.

Local officials who install “smart” technologies and develop policy initiatives without first assessing the actual needs and concerns of their residents miss the point of building internet-connected cities, several government and non-profit technology officials said Tuesday.
Speaking at the Smart Cities Connect Expo in National Harbor, Maryland, Jordan Davis, the director of Smart Columbus, the nonprofit agency that promotes Columbus, Ohio‘s “smart city” program, said that early community outreach is critical to develop trust between government and the denizens unfamiliar with new technologies being deployed in their neighborhoods. Without that engagement, residents could assume that officials are covering up details of what the tech does, or not believe that they benefit from their adoption.

- The IMD World Competitiveness Center partnered with the Singapore University of Technology and Design to release an index ranking 102 global smart cities. The rankings are based on residents' perceptions of issues related to structures and technology applications available to them in their city.
- The top five global cities are Singapore, Zurich, Oslo, Geneva and Copenhagen. Nine U.S. cities made the list; the highest ranking one is San Francisco at No. 12. It is then followed by a bevy of U.S. cities further down the list: Washington, DC (31); Boston (32); Denver (33); Seattle (34); Los Angeles (35); New York City (38); Chicago (53); and Philadelphia (54).
- The index notes that being a globally recognized smart city now is critical to attract investment and talent. This is the first edition of the index and it took the partners two years of work to compile. Researchers hope to expand the scope of topics studied as well as the number of cities included in future editions.
