“This is not your father’s Oldsmobile,” said the car ad tag line. Well, this is not your father’s electric utility.

The traditional electric utility is a simple ABC construct: The electricity is generated in one place (A) and sent down a wire (B) to the customer (C). In today’s electric world, power is generated from many sources and wires carry the current to and from diverse points, switching in fractions of seconds.

Atlanta has installed fiber-optic cable for a new “smart city” corridor to connect dozens of neighborhoods with an advanced communications network, according to a Thursday announcement from a vendor working with the city.

The “Atlanta BeltLine” project, which aims to connect 45 neighborhoods with trails, streetcars and parks, is now home to more than 15 miles of fiber-optic cable that will be used for residential, business and public-safety infrastructure, according to Ex2 Technology, a company that worked with the city and Atlanta BeltLine Inc. — the region’s economic development agency — to lay the fiber.

The many smart city initiatives either already underway or planned worldwide should include EV charging in their plans. While we do not yet have the fully autonomous vehicles smart city visionaries imagined, conventional EV charging is being deployed in cities everywhere. Today's EV charging is still hands-on. These deployments often place the burden of knowledge and expertise on nontechnical managers and administrators. Smart, electrified cities, however, require ample charging for both residents and commuters. As the CEO of a company that offers EV charging management solutions, I believe that infrastructure should be at the core of smart city planning, not a complicated add-on to be dealt with later.
