Building on the recent successful conclusion of the Smart City Challenge (SCC), the City of Columbus has announced it is looking forward and Smart Columbus will become a collaborative innovation lab as it continues the development of new innovations to benefit its residents.

The SCC was created by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to evaluate a holistic approach to using new technologies to improve transportation performance, and how that approach could be integrated with other smart city domains, including public services, health, safety and energy. Columbus was named the SCC winner in 2016.

Recent policy moves by the Executive Branch of America’s government have opened up an opportunity for biometrics capabilities, some of which are ancient by industry standards, to be finally upgraded, the ‘Facing the Future: Biometrics for Law Enforcement’ webinar, sponsored by Intel and Red Hat. The discussion, while referring regularly to police biometrics, was often more generally about the adoption of biometrics by government agencies.

Moderated by GovExec Media President Constance Sayers, the panel included RedHat Law Enforcement Solution Advisor Brian Buzzell, GAO Director of Information Technology and Cybersecurity Kevin Walsh, and Marios Savvides, a professor of AI and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and Director of its CyLab Biometrics Center.

A project led by the South Carolina Department on Aging (SCDOA) and Palmetto Care Connections (PCC) is looking to reduce the digital divide among seniors by teaching them necessary skills for the digital age — like how to access digital tools, from emails to telehealth.

Florida’s Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) has selected Fujitsu Communications to plan, design and deploy a broadband network expansion to be part of a neighborhood revitalization for promoting long-term business growth on the Florida coast.

FPUA is a public utility that has provided electric, water, wastewater and natural gas services to the City of Fort Pierce and surrounding areas since 1972. Starting in the early 2000s, FPUA began offering dedicated internet to large businesses and anchor institutions through its FPUAnet division. In 2018, the FPUA Board approved an initiative to become a smart city by providing high-speed internet to all parcels within the city. This initiative provided the opportunity for a community partnership to deploy into Lincoln Park, one of the city’s revitalization zones.

Delivery will advance Smart City Mobility in Racine and other municipalities with Perrone’s autonomous vehicle solutions.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has awarded a contract to Perrone Robotics, Inc., to deliver an electric low speed vehicle (LSV) shuttle integrated with the company's TONY® retrofit kit.

The shuttle, nicknamed "The Badger," is part of an effort to pioneer and integrate autonomous vehicle shuttles into public transportation systems in Racine, Wisc. It will be used across student, faculty and guest transit operations.
