Jeff Price, VP and GM, ITS, at Cubic Transportation Systems looks at the latest US road safety statistics, which are some of the worst on record. He highlights how technology, public-private partnerships and federal funding are new combining in an effort to make roads safer again.

There’s a growing crisis in transportation. According to the latest statistics from the US Department of Transportation, more than 30,000 people died on US roads in the first nine months of 2021. That’s about a 12% increase, compared to the first nine months of 2020. This is the highest number of transportation-related fatalities during the first three-quarters of the year since 2006 and the highest nine-month percentage increase in the history of data recorded by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

The city puts video surveillance at the center of its data-sharing efforts.

Raleigh, N.C., hosts an annual Connected Communities Conference (formerly known as the Triangle Smart Cities Summit), where private and public sector leaders gather to tackle everything from transit to connectivity and digital inclusion.

The city has won financial support for its modernization efforts, including grants from the Knight Foundation and Next Century Cities, and IDC has honored Raleigh with a Smart Cities North America Award.

It will deliver connectivity and consulting services, and will connect customers with companies that provide applications in areas such as smart lighting, parking and waste as well as digital kiosks.

Media and technology giant Comcast is launching a smart cities division called Comcast Smart Solutions.

It made the announcement at the Smart Cities Spring Conference & Expo in Columbus, Ohio, which took place this week.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration released new details about its contentious “smart cities” project on Monday, shortly after City Council President Helena Moreno sent a subpoena to a top administration official demanding he turn over a wide range of relevant documents and appear at an April 27 council meeting to answer questions under oath.

The information appears in a four-page letter from Director of the Mayor’s Office of Utilities Jonathan Rhodes, who was the subject of the subpoena.

A city-led initiative to smash the digital divide in Covington by expanding access to free, public Wi-Fi has been named one of the 50 most transformative “smart” projects in the world.

To date, almost half of Covington residents have signed up for public Wi-Fi through what’s called “Covington Connect,” and it already has hosted more than 780,000 online sessions with an average duration of over an hour.

This week, the collaborative project unveiled during the start of the pandemic was recognized by Smart Cities Connect at the 5th Annual Smart 50 Award Gala in Columbus, Ohio.
