Jakarta is hosting a meeting of ASEAN city leaders in 2023. It is hoped that this agenda will be a forum for exchanging good experiences in managing urban issues.
Heads of regions from cities in ASEAN member countries shared their best practice experiences and worked together to support sustainable city development. Five issues emerged in a meeting titled "Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals & ASEAN Mayors Forum 2023" or MGMAC & AMF 2023.
The acting Governor of Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, revealed during the opening of MGMAC & AMF 2023 on Tuesday (1/8/2023) that the MGMAC & AMF agenda is a way for city and regional governments in Southeast Asia to support the sustainability and relevance of ASEAN in responding to regional and global challenges. In addition, it is also aimed at strengthening ASEAN's position as the center of regional economic growth for the prosperity of ASEAN and the world.
Held on August 1st and 2nd, 2023, MGMAC & AMF 2023 was held to support Indonesia's Chairmanship in ASEAN. Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi opened the event.
As it is known, MGMAC was first initiated by Jakarta provincial government when President Joko Widodo was still serving as Governor of Jakarta in 2013. In line with the theme of Indonesia's chairmanship in ASEAN, MGMAC and AMF 2023 in Jakarta raised the theme "Catalysing Regional Growth through Sustainable Development in ASEAN Cities."
At least there are five priority topics that are discussed and shared as best practices from each city. They are inclusive economic growth, digital transformation, sustainable development and climate action, sustainable development goals, as well as good governance and enhanced cooperation.
The Secretary of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, Joko Agus Setyono, explained to the media after the opening of the MGMAC & AMF 2023 that Jakarta offers the development of MSMEs and mass transportation as topics of discussion and good practices. In addition, Jakarta is also developing digital transformation in the form of Jakarta Smart City.
"That is what we will share. Meanwhile, we will also listen and take good practices from every country that they have applied," said Joko.
For Jakarta, according to Joko, the existence of residents who are below the poverty line and unemployed makes the Jakarta Provincial Government learn from other cities in ASEAN for improvement. "This is something we strive for improvement by learning from cities in ASEAN," he said.
Then there is also the problem of street vendors (PKL) and traffic jams. "This is an experience for Jakarta. Maybe other countries have already overcome this issue to exchange experiences on how to solve it," said Joko.
The 2023 MGMAC & AMF agenda will take place in one more day, on August 2 2023. This meeting was attended by 234 delegates, including Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Countries, representatives of local government associations from ASEAN member countries, ASEAN Community Permanent Representatives, cooperation partners (< i>partners), and other multilateral bodies.
