Burkina Faso, the small West African state rated the third-poorest country in the world by the United Nations, last week launched the Burkina Open Data Initiative in the capital, Ougadougou. The project makes 50 data sets from the country’s health ministry available to the public, with data from more government ministries to follow in September.

Alcatel-Lucent is to provide the government of Burkina Faso with cloud networking technology that will enable it to develop new digital public services, such as E-government, E-learning and E-health.

Alcatel-Lucent will supply the West African nation with its NFV (Network Functions Virtualization), Cloudband and IP platforms, which will be integrated into the ‘G-Cloud’ infrastructure to being built around virtualized network resources from cloud nodes in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital, and five provinces.

Under new multi-year agreement, Burkina Faso government expands use of fibre-like connectivity and managed services to connect government offices and schools

A new multi-year agreement between Burkina Faso and SES Networks will enable the local administration of the African country to continue using high-speed connectivity to roll out e-government, e-education and e-health services. The fibre-like connectivity enjoyed by the land-locked country is delivered via the high throughput, low latency O3b Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite fleet, SES announced.

SES and Commission Électorale Nationale Indépendante (CENI), the official electoral body of Burkina Faso, today announced that they have partnered to enable secure digital transmission of the electoral results of the Burkinabe Presidential Election on 29 November from 368 locations across the country.

Electoral district offices across Burkina Faso will be connected to the central CENI office in the capital Ouagadougou utilising SES Techcom Services’ Astra Connect VSAT terminals. SES Techcom Services is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SES. The communications platform will use ASTRA 2G capacity at 28.2 degrees East, being managed and monitored by SES Techcom Services. In addition, Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone communication will be provided at each deployed site to enable constant contact and coordination with the headquarters in the capital.
