Mt Druitt is among one of the first areas to be selected to trial a new electronic health record system introduced by the Federal Government.

The e-health system will allow patients to keep track of their own immunisation records, medical tests and prescriptions online.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon recently visited Mt Druitt Medical Centre to explain the advantages of the health initiative.

Ms Roxon said Mt Druitt and Western Sydney were chosen because of the large population and high percentage of young families who would benefit from the system.

``E-health is one of the critical elements of the Gillard Government’s efforts to modernise our health system through national reform,’’ Ms Roxon said.

``We have to utilise new technology to improve the current system.’‘

She said it would provide better health care and allow patients to be more informed about their medical documents.

Mt Druitt GP Kean Seng Lim said the new system wouldn’t make life easier for for doctors, the benefits of e-health would be seen in the broader health care spectrum.

``I believe that a well implemented electronic health record system has the potential to significantly improve patient health care by bridging the gaps in the current health system,’’ he said.

Patients can sign up at their local clinic from July.
