Councils have stepped forward to take control of three further National Projects for local e-government

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has confirmed that local authorities are now willing to take responsibility for the projects on mobile working, knowledge management and workflow.

Two of the authorities – Leeds City Council and St. Helens MBC – are already in control of their projects, while Cambridgeshire CC is now in the process of completing the formal transfer of its scheme. Leeds is to lead the ACKnowledge, the local knowledge management scheme, St. Helens will take charge of the Workflow Performance Framework project and Cambridgeshire is poised to assume control of the Nomad mobile working initiative.

Local authorities have now taken responsibility for four projects previously under the control of the ODPM. The first to go was the smart card scheme, taken on by Bracknell Forest BC.

The ODPM is still looking for homes for two further initiatives, CRM and the Valuebill data exchange for local billing agencies, after LB Newham declined to take on the leadership. It is also waiting for councils to come forward for the other 16 projects before the end of this year when it ends its e-government funding.

A spokesperson for the ODPM told Government Computing News on 26 August 2005 that the Nomad project is set to be transferred over in "the next few days" but would give no further details.

"Until this has been finalised it would not be appropriate to go into further details," said the spokesperson. "Nomad has been transferred in principle and there are likely to be more details shortly."

The spokesperson would not reveal how many councils have applied to take on the CRM project but said that the ODPM is "very pleased with the number of applications received".
