Azerbaijan will adopt new standards on information and communication technologies (ICT) by the end of year, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies reported on Thursday.

The work is underway in accordance with an action plan for 2013, which was announced as ICT year.

Within the work it is also planned to prepare three standards on biometric technologies, four - on digital television, two - in the sphere of development of program products as well as two standards in the sphere of terminology.

The preparation of these standards will be based on the international standards.

Work on the preparation of new standards for ICT is conducted by Azerbaijani Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies, the State Agency for Public Services and Social Innovations under the President of Azerbaijan as well as the State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents.

Azerbaijan is taking important steps in the ICT sector. Azerbaijan achieved 10.5 percent growth in the ICT sector in the first half of 2013 compared to the same period of last year. During the reported period the volume of investments made by enterprises and structural units of the ministry in the ICT sector amounted to 29.98 million manats.

In total some 71.2 million manats were invested into the ICT sector of the country.

Some 76.1 percent of revenues from the ICT sector and postal services fell on non-state sectors. In this case, some 65.2 percent of the total amount of revenues fell on mobile communication services, which is 8.4 percent more than in 2012, the report said.

The volume of revenues of the ICT sector and postal services in Azerbaijan in January-June increased by 10.5 percent, compared to the same period of 2012, amounting to 756.8 million manats.

The real growth rate for the last period on telecommunication sector of the country was six percent in IT sector - by 1.8 times, in the postal sector - by 11.7 percent.

Furthermore, Azerbaijan ranked eighth among 144 countries on the index of "Government's achievements in ICT", ninth on the index of "Importance of ICT in the government's view for the future" and 20th on "Internet availability" in the World Economic Forum's Global Information Technology Report 2013.
