Monchito was the guest speaker at the e-Government seminar organised by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). He shared with the audience CICT's vision of a society where citizens have access to ICT providing sustainable economic development, efficient government service, quality education, and a better way of life.
He revealed that ever since they implemented the system that allowed Filipinos to apply for birth certificates online, they received 10,000 applications everyday. He also presented an United Nations e-Government Survey that shows the readiness of each country in e-Government In the Southeast Asian ranking, Singapore came rust, with Malaysia and Thailand in second and third places respectively. The Philippines is in fourth, and Brunei, fifth.
When asked by The Brunei Times if there are any comet plans between both parties for any internship or exchange programmes, Monchito revealed that discussions are still in the early stage.
He said that the purpose of his visit was more to improve understanding and communication with his Bruneian counterparts, in order for both sides to exchange each other's best practices.
When asked whether he foresee the possibility of the Philippines and Brunei sharing citizenship database for immigration purposes in the future, he replied that the sharing of the database is the direction that Asean is taking, and thus that is something that will happen in the future.
He added that however, there are a lot of difficulties for such a plan, and he does not see it happening any time soon.
The EGLF is chaired by PMO Deputy Minister Dam Seri Paduka Hj Eusoff Agaki Hj Ismail and it functions as the executive owner of the e-government initiative to drive the implementation of strategic actions across all e-government projects.
The talk on Government was organised by the ministry to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences between Brunei and the Philippines.
