The Smart City Proposal (SCP) for Panjim under the Smart City Development Mission would be ready by November 30, with major focus on solid waste management, smart mobility, e-governance and retrofitting of heritage sites.
Under the smart city project, the Corporation of the City of Panaji, the nodal agency for implementation of the project, intends to replace all the 4500 street lights in Panjim with LED lights covering 40 percent of energy saving.
Speaking to media persons soon after an ordinary meeting, CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues said that the last date for submitting suggestions and views for SCP ends on November 27, based on which the final proposal will be drafted by November 30. “Based on the public inputs, we have identified thrust areas which include solid waste management, smart mobility and e-governance,” he said, adding, “under pan-city initiative, we would be taking up retrofitting of heritage sites.”
The strategic components of area-based development in the smart city mission are city improvement, city renewal and city extension.
ICLEI South Asia, is the consultant appointed for drafting SCP, which will be moved to Union Ministry for Urban Development before December 15.
“One of the strategies of the Smart City Plan is to bring down the carbon emissions by 2020 by smart lighting and replacing the street lights with LED lights,” Rodrigues said.
On replacing all the 4500 street lights with LED lights, he said the CCP intends to invite private party to introduce smart lighting.
Moreover, with increasing city population, CCP feels that there is a need to have additional sulabh (public) toilets in the city. Currently, there are 37 toilets in Panjim, whereas the requirement is 62.
The meeting resolved to build additional toilets and hold special meeting with Sulabh association for proper maintenance and hygiene of the existing ones. “We will inspect all the toilets, right from its structure to availability of water and hygienic condition. As per requirement, the toilets would be repaired,” CCP Mayor Shubham Chodankar said.
CCP has decided to hold a special meeting in the first week of December, wherein it would discuss various measures to increase the revenue generation and to curb revenue leakages.
