In a major stride by the Kerala State IT Mission (KSITM), the state would become the first to implement the Cloud data technology as per the guidelines laid down by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY).
The Cloud system will host and co-host e-governance applications of various departments thereby reducing data storage at the departmental level.
Four centralised cloud servers will be inaugurated by Minister for IT and Industries P K Kunhalikutty, in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. The change has been envisioned as an austerity measure, as it would not require maintenance staff or multiple servers at the departmental level.
“Departments would no longer be required to maintain individual servers for service applications related to it. It would thereby cut down purchase expenditure with regard to hardware and also would enable centralised data monitoring for better error reporting,” said Bijoy Korah, IT manager, Kerala State Information Technology Mission (KSITM).
Currently, the trial run of the cloud system is underway at the state data center-2, at Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, which has hosted e-governance applications of Kollam City Police and KSITM.
However, the system, initially would not accommodate applications with high traffic.
“Our Cloud system will only accommodate those applications which have low traffic,” said Mohammed Y Safirulla.
Additionally, the cloud system would enable functioning of various departmental e-applications regardless of its platform and version.
Centralised data center would also enable backup and faster recovery of data in case of an accidental data loss.
The Central Government had granted a sum of Rs 1.5 crores for the establishment of cloud system. However, officials at KSITM added that only Rs 1.35 crores was utilised for setting up the system.
