Students interested in furthering their secondary education at the Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM) can now submit their application for the 2010 intake online.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the introduction of the online system was in line with the development in information technology, besides simplifying and saving time processing applications using the existing process.

Besides that, he said, the effort was in line with the e-Government policy in providing facilities to clients dealing with government departments and agencies.

Currently, the intake of MRSM students is done manually starting from the advertorial on the opening of the intake, followed by the sale of application forms through the MARA headquarters, State MARA office and District MARA office.

"The advertorial on online application into MRSM for entry into Form 4 will be published in mid-August while the one for entry into Form 1 will be published a week before the UPSR (Primary School Evaluation Test) result is released, which is expected to be mid-November," he told reporters after presenting the MARA Excellence Award 2008 to 168 of the agency's staff here, Thursday.

He said applicants should get a pin number first from the nearest state or district MARA office by bringing along their PMR results for application into Form 4 and UPSR results for application into Form 1.

"To get the pin numbers, applicants into Form 4 need to bring their PMR trial exam results to prove that they meet the pre-requisite of a pass in Mathematics and Sciences. However, they must also meet the entry requirement of at least 6As and 2Bs.

"For application into Form 1, applicants need to get 5As," Shafie said.

He said after retrieving the pin numbers and applying online, candidates into Form 4 then needed to sit for the computerised MRSM Inclination Entrance Test which was set by MRSM.

He said some 6,000 and 5,000 places were available for applicants into Form 1 and Form 4 respectively next year at the 42 MRSMs across the country.

He added that the system would strengthen MARA's delivery and service system and boost the integrity and quality of the applicants' data as well as the student intake selection process.

MARA has previously developed an online application system for entrance into MARA Educational Institutions through UPIM Online which includes Universiti Kuala Lumpur, German Malaysian Institute, MARA Professional College, MARA Poly-Tech College and MARA Higher Skills Institute.

Meanwhile, for the Mara Skills Institute (IKM), application can be made via the IKM Online system.
