California city partners with Labrynth to pioneer AI-powered permitting, cutting delays and boosting investment.
The city of Lancaster, California, has become one of the first cities in the US to use Labrynth’s artificial intelligence solution to speed up its permitting process, in a move officials say could transform the local government’s regulatory efficiency.
Regulatory intelligence company Labrynth’s AI-powered platform automates application checks, validating submissions against requirements, and flagging missing details. The system is expected to reduce bottlenecks and accelerate approvals in high-impact areas such as housing, energy, and infrastructure. It enables faster decisions and fewer delays across regulatory workflows, especially for development, zoning, and licensing approvals.
Lancaster’s Mayor, R. Rex Parris said the move reflects the city’s history of adopting forward looking policies: “Lancaster has always been a city that sees possibility where others see roadblocks,” he said. “By leveraging Labrynth’s AI-powered platform, we’re not just keeping up with the future, we’re shaping it.”
Stuart Lacey, CEO, Labrynth, called Lancaster’s adoption of AI a signal to other local authorities: “Lancaster is doing more than modernising – they’re showing other cities across America what’s possible. Their leadership underscores a broader shift across the country: when local governments remove barriers, they unlock opportunity. Lancaster is the blueprint.”
This announcement comes ahead of the launch of the national Red Tape City Index, where Lancaster is one of the first 100 cities to be featured. The index scores US cities on permitting speed, transparency, and regulatory readiness, and will expand to over 500 cities during the course of September.
Lacey added: “As cities nationwide look to reduce delays, attract investment, and accelerate innovation, Lancaster’s partnership with Labrynth sets a replicable model. With the Red Tape Index poised to spotlight permitting performance at scale, we are enabling a new class of ‘Red Tape Ready’ jurisdictions to lead in the AI-powered economy.”
